Every finance vendor is running a slide that says “AI is transforming the office of the CFO.” Most of those slides are lying by omission. Yes, adoption is up. No, the software is not yet doing what the demos promised. We pulled the numbers ourselves.

Ten findings from this year’s data

  1. 41.4% of 10-K filings in 2026 YTD mention “artificial intelligence”, up from 32.0% in 2025 full year. Generative AI specifically jumped from 8.4% of filings to 12.8%, a 52% relative increase in a single year.
  2. Finance teams name Claude more often than any other single model when they name one on r/CFO. Across 118 AI-tagged posts we pulled from five finance subs, Claude was named 21 times, ChatGPT and generic “GPT” together 12 times, Copilot 8, Gemini 2. Copilot dominates enterprise seat counts. On operator forums, it does not.
  3. Skepticism is louder than adoption is quiet. The two highest-scoring AI-tagged posts on r/Accounting this year (over 2,000 upvotes each) are both mocking AI output quality. In the same corpus, “productivity wins” posts outnumber “overhyped” posts 47 to 33.
  4. Vendor mentions are concentrated at the top and non-existent in the middle. Of the 34 named finance tools we tracked, 21 (including several heavily-marketed close and reconciliation tools) got zero operator mentions in our Reddit sample.
  5. Job requirements ask for AI, but not for the vendor-preferred tools. Google-indexed LinkedIn finance job posts show 111,000 mentioning “ChatGPT,” 54,800 mentioning “Claude,” and only 37,500 mentioning “Copilot.” Enterprise procurement bought Copilot; hiring managers ask for ChatGPT and Claude.
  6. The Services sector dominates AI-disclosing filers. 46% of 2026 YTD AI-mentioning 10-Ks are in Services. Financial Services filers, despite the industry hype, are only 14% of AI-disclosing filings — roughly matching their share of total 10-K filings.
  7. Claude Enterprise sits at $28-55 per seat per month. ChatGPT Enterprise sits at $45-75 with a 150-seat minimum. Gemini is folded into Workspace at $21-30.
  8. YC pushed at least 15 named AI-for-CFO startups through W25, S25, and F25 batches. The category is not one product; it is a landgrab.
  9. The ROI numbers vendors publish are real for narrow tasks and imaginary for the aggregate. Reconciliation AI cutting a 30-hour task to 3 hours is credible. “$200K annual investment produces 18-37x ROI” is a marketing artifact.
  10. The gap between “finance uses ChatGPT” and “finance runs on AI agents” is still wide. Consero Global reported 97% of finance departments have adopted AI in some form in 2026. Gartner’s tighter definition puts it at 59%. The truth is that most finance teams use AI the way most people use it: one person, one browser tab, ad hoc.

10-K disclosure trend

In 2025 full year, 3,324 of 10,381 10-K filings we counted through EDGAR mentioned “artificial intelligence.” That is 32.0%. In 2026 year-to-date, 3,748 of 9,054 filings, or 41.4%. A 9.4 percentage point jump in one year.

What operators actually use

Named-tool mentions in 118 AI-tagged posts across r/CFO, r/FPandA, r/Accounting, r/Controller, and r/FinancialCareers:

Read that last row again. Some of the loudest names in mid-market finance SaaS got exactly zero mentions in our AI-tagged operator sample.

Five contrarian findings we would defend under cross-examination

  1. Finance’s AI adoption is a lagging indicator, not a leading one. Sales, marketing, engineering, and legal all show higher AI seat penetration than finance in the 2026 vendor surveys we cross-checked. Finance’s tolerance for hallucination is close to zero, and finance’s data lives in more fragmented systems than any other function.
  2. The winning finance AI vendors are the ones investing hardest in data plumbing. The FP&A copilots that actually work spend most of their engineering effort on schema, entity resolution, and lineage. The AI question is easy. The data-model-under-the-question is hard.
  3. Copilot’s seat count will drop, not rise, in 2027. Enterprises paid for Copilot as an existing-vendor add-on. Operators prefer Claude and ChatGPT. On renewal, procurement will feel it.
  4. The “AI agent” category will bifurcate. Tightly-scoped agents in one workflow will become commodity software. General-purpose “office of the CFO” agents will mostly not survive their first real-world outage.
  5. “Autonomous close” is not shipping in 2027. Multiple vendors are marketing it today. Operator posts uniformly say some version of “we still eyeball everything.”

Five predictions for 2027 — grade us in twelve months

  1. 10-K “artificial intelligence” mention rate crosses 55% for 2026 full year and 65% for 2027 filings.
  2. One of the AI-native finance startups (Basis, Rillet, Puzzle, Campfire, Concourse) becomes the third mid-market GL choice behind NetSuite and Sage Intacct.
  3. ChatGPT Enterprise 150-seat minimum goes away in 2027.
  4. A mid-market CFO ships a public postmortem for an AI-driven material misstatement.
  5. FP&A hiring requirements will explicitly name at least one AI tool by 2027-Q4.
